This is where Teeter's Telescopes first made our name in the industry - small to moderate apertures and long focal lengths in Truss-Dobsonian structures. The "Planet Killer" line is best suited for planetary and lunar observing, but can also provide high contrast views of deep space objects. Small central obstructions by the secondary mirror and ultra-smooth optical surfaces yield pin-point star images and awesome planetary and lunar details.

Why Buy a STS?

With the high price of apochromat ("apo") refractors, many observers find it prohibitive to own a large aperture planetary instrument, and with the advent of high quality newtonian mirrors, a properly constructed newtonian can rival and in many instances exceed a similarly sized refractor in planetary detail;

 

Back in 2002, when Teeter's Telescopes was first established, all of our telescopes were designed to be "Planet Killers." We still include many of the same contrast boosting enhancements including a black velvet baffle internal to the mirrorbox, black velvet baffling across from the focuser, low-diffraction spider vanes and small secondary mirrors that yield central obstructions below the key planetary threshold of 20% (Secondary Minor Axis/Primary Diameter);

 

These small to medium aperture, long focal length, scopes represent the ultimate in planetary performance in a package that is transportable and comfortable to use all night long;

 

Small to moderate apertures provide stunning planetary and lunar details to fascinate even the most experienced observer;

 

The slow focal ratios (>F/6) do not require the use of a coma corrector;

 

Our Truss Ring makes these apertures and focal ratios a breeze to set up and transport;

 

Your choice of Lightholder Optical (LO) or Zambuto Optical Company (ZOC) primary mirrors provide primary mirrors of the highest quality currently available. Antares Optics provides finely crafted secondary mirrors that are a perfect match for either of the above primary mirrors. Magnifications of 40x-50x per inch of aperture are achievable on nights of steady atmospheric seeing conditions;

 

Lightholder Optical (LO) primary mirrors come with printed test reports, while Antares Optics secondary mirrors come Zygo tested. No test reports are provided with the ZOC primary mirrors, but ZOC's reputation in the industry for the highest quality optics is legendary (no test reports need apply!).

"The detail on Jupiter and Saturn was excellent. Saturn displayed the encke Minima, spokes in the ansea, and I could see the narrow EB band below the major belt (I think it is the SEB we are seeing now), not to mention the polar region, some other belts toward the Southern pole and a few of the moons. I was able to glimpse this detail at 360X. Jupiter displayed two ovals, festoons everywhere, and just a wealth of detail. Plus I could later on in the night observe the disk of one of the moons across the planets surface. I used 180X and 225X on Jupiter.

 

The boundary layer fans were deffinently doing their job, as the mirror was performing consistently better as the minutes went buy. I experimented and noticed that the image of Saturn was BETTER when the fans were running, but dulled a little when I shut them off. An observing buddy, Wayne, commented that the star pattern shows a near perfect mirror and I would have to say that when used in combo with the boundary layer fans last night the scope was taking higher powers like a refractor. It is important to note too that the temperature was dropping quickly from a hot day to were it was starting to feel pretty cold around 10 pm.

 

What amazes me is the ease at which this scope takes 500-600X!!! So as you can see this scope is a real performer!!"
